Tanner is a lawyer in Dallas, Texas. He attended Brigham Young University and Columbia Law School, where he graduated as a James Kent Scholar. After graduation, he clerked for Chief Judge David Nye of the United States District Court for the District of Idaho.

Alongside his practice, he maintains a commitment to scholarship. His research explores how common law principles can resolve contemporary problems in administrative and intellectual property law.

Before law school, he was a copywriter at an advertising agency, where his work won a Clio award and a One Show pencil.
